However, they do need approving by the DVLA first which is why some people’s cherished number plates are receiving the no-no from the DVLA.

Like with everything there is always someone that tries to push their luck when it comes to choosing their own personal number plates, and the DVLA is used to receiving some requests of the more bizarre nature. Some number plates have been deemed too rude to place on cars and include things like; L4 TEX and STR 11P. Well, it was worth a try wasn’t it!

However, whatever car he owns from now on will display his cherished number plate and there will be no question as to who he supports when he drives past!

History Of Number Plates

Friday, February 26th, 2010

It may not initially seem hugely interesting, but the history of number plates is quite relevant when you consider the increasing number of people buying personalised number plates.

Number plates were first introduced back in 1903. This was part of the Motor Car Act. This first style of number plates is what we now refer to as cherished number plates. The first cherished number plate ever to be produced was “A1″ and this was given to Earl Russell.

The next important date was 1963. This is when the suffix style of license plates was introduced. The letter at the end of the registration plate depicted the year that the car was from.

21 years later, prefix styles of number plates were released. These were in the form of “A111 AAA”. These were always in the form of one letter, three numbers and three letters. The first letter was important as this designated the year the car was made, for example, “A” was 1984, “B” was 1985 and “C” was 1986 etcetera.

A further 17 years later saw the release of the current style of number plates which we have today. These are in the form of two letters (which show where the car is from), two numbers which show when it was made and then another three letters.

If you’re in the market for any form of these number plates, then Platinum Plates is the place to go. We supply all different styles of number plate at a wide variety of prices so you’re sure to find the right plate at the right price.

Famous Plates

Friday, February 19th, 2010

Whether or not a personalised number plate is a worthwhile investment is really down to personal taste. Some people see them as a bit of a flashy thing to have and they don’t really see the point of them. However, there are a great number of us, celebrities included, who happen to think that a personalised number plate is an accessory well worth having.

It’s certainly easier for wealthy celebrities to afford personalised number plates. Some of the number plates that celebrities have are highly sought after, and therefore cost a fair bit. Celebrities often look for personalised number plates that reflect the field they work in or part of their character. For example, Paul Daniels searched for years to find the number plate “MAG 1C”; this clearly spells out MAGIC and is perfect for Paul as he is allegedly a magician. Nicky Clarke, the male hairdresser, has the number plate “H41 RDO”; this spells out hairdo which is obviously in reference to his job as a hairdresser. In keeping with referencing your work, the comic Jimmy Tarbuck has the number plate “COM 1C”; this is clearly descriptive of his role as a comedian.

Whilst we might not all be able to have a number plate that reflects our job, at Platinum Plates we have a search facility that allows you to search through our huge range of number plates allowing you to quickly and easily find your perfect plate. You may not be able to have a number plate with your job title, but you’ll certainly find something meaningful to you.

Plates With Initial Excellence

Friday, February 12th, 2010

Personalised number plates have always been a fantastic accessory for your car. They give vehicles a mark of individuality and can also reflect part of the driver’s thoughts, likes and character.

The three different styles of number plates available have given us numerous funny, meaningful and significant number plates. The older style of number plates was especially good for this. With the modern style of number plate, it’s not particularly easy to find a meaningful word. For example, it’s not very easy to make something significant out of a number plate that starts with “AE58″!

However, modern style number plates do have at least one significant use: initials. The newer style of number plate allows for a huge variety in the initials that can be used, for example, if your name is John Smith, you could have a number plate starting with the initials “JS”. To take it a step further, if your name was John Smith and you got married to a girl named Amy in 2002, then the perfect number plate might be “JS02 AMY”. Perfect as this might be for Mr Smith, it may win the approval of Mrs Smith also.

There’s so much to do with personalised number plates that it’s often hard to pick your favourite. Platinum Plates have a huge range of personalised number plates. Our search facility allows you to quickly and easily find your perfect combination of letters and numbers. We have so many number plates available that finding plenty of perfect number plates is relatively easy; the only real difficulty will be choosing which one you like the most.

Nostalgic Number Plates

Friday, February 5th, 2010

For any adult, it’s perfectly normal to reminisce about “the good old days”; penny sweets really did cost a penny, health and safety didn’t prevent us doing any of the risky things we liked to do and cartoons and TV actually had full contact action. I’m sure many of us have great memories of programs such as The A-Team, Knight Rider and Dukes of Hazzard. These were great shows. The A-Team had a great way of using numerous guns, rockets and grenades but never actually killing anyone. You’d always see bullets being fired but they’d never hit anyone; it was just good, harmless fun.

One important part of these shows was the vehicles. The A-Team van, the General Lee from Dukes of Hazard and Kitt from Knight Rider are all very memorable. Another aspect of the cars was the number plates. Kitt in particular had a very noticeable number plate: it was “KNIGHT”, as in Michael Knight who drove the car.

Whilst you might not be able to have the number plate “KNIGHT”, companies like us at Platinum Plates may be able to offer a meaningful alternative. We have an excellent search facility that allows you to find perfect personalised number plates. If your name happens to be Michael Knight and you’re 34 years old, then the number plate “34 MK” could look ideal on a black Pontiac Trans Am.

Movie Star Number Plates

Monday, February 1st, 2010

Over the years, many films have featured some very memorable vehicles. Who can forget vehicles such as the Cadillac Miller-Meteor, more commonly known as the Ectomobile from Ghostbusters; the Delorian from Back to the Future; the Ford Anglia from the Harry Potter films and any number of cars from the James Bond films. There are simply too many famous vehicles to list.

However, one important thing that you may have missed are the personalised number plates that can be found on some of these vehicles. Obviously they’re not the most important part of the film, but they do have an impact on adding a dimension to a character or even just providing a little amusement for the viewer. One of the most famous personalised number plates to be found in a movie is “OUTATIME”, which was famously on the Delorian in Back To The Future. This was obviously used to highlight Michael J Fox’s time travelling antics. The number plate “AU 1″ was made famous in a certain James Bond film called Goldfinger. The initials AU are the chemical symbol for gold and this plate was cleverly placed on Mr Goldfinger’s car due to his love of the precious metal.

Even though we are not all famous movie stars, there’s absolutely no reason why we shouldn’t enjoy our own personalised number plates. At Platinum Plates, we have a huge range of number plates. Our excellent search facility allows you to quickly and easily find the perfect number plate to reflect a part of your character.

Plates For Your Parents

Friday, January 22nd, 2010

With so many different occasions where we have to buy presents for our parents, it’s no surprise that we struggle for ideas. I’m sure there are plenty of us who have rushed around before our mum’s birthday desperately looking for the right present, only to end up with some flowers and chocolates; sure that she’ll say they’re nice but deep down, she’s probably disappointed. It generally only gets worse when we shop for our dad; they generally don’t give a lot of ideas and sometimes their reaction to a gift doesn’t really show what they really feel about it. It can be really hard as we clearly want to buy our parents gifts that show how we feel about them.

There may be a solution to this problem. The next occasion that comes up, whether it be birthday, Christmas, Mother’s Day or Father’s Day, a personalised number plate could well be the perfect gift. Platinum Plates supply a huge range of number plates. We provide a search facility that allows you to search on your parents’ names; you can then choose the perfect plate based on the search results. However, arguably better than your parent’s name, would be a number plate containing the letters “MUM” or “DAD.” Imagine a parents pride at being given a present with so much thought and meaning. We have a wide range of number plates containing the words “MUM” or “DAD.” With prices ranging from £156 for the number plate “AA59 DAD” to £29,680 for the number plate “MUM 3I”, there really is something to suit everyone’s budget.
