Buying Private Number Plates at Auction

Tuesday, November 24th, 2009

The DVLA (Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency) holds regular auctions throughout the year, where you can bid for previously unreleased number plate registrations. About six auctions take place every year at locations across the UK. Essentially, these events are great chances to bid for some highly distinctive and collectable private number plates.

Some of these auctions sell specialised private number plates such as K1 NGS, which recently fetched a price tag of £235,000. Far more modestly, there are also private number plates up for sale which were not previously released as not enough cars were produced in a particular year to fill all the available registrations.

At a recent auction in Barnsley, for example, hundreds of private number plates ranging from 94A to 20YY were up for grabs.

Bidding in person is undoubtedly fun. But it may not always be convenient, and if you thought you had to attend to bid, think again! At Platinum Plates, for example, as a fully licensed seller of private number plates, we can secure the plates of your dreams by bidding on your behalf.

At Platinum Plates, we have full details of all the dates of DVLA auctions, and all the private number plates available at them. Have a browse and see which ones you want.

If you’d like us to put in your bid at a forthcoming auction, give us a call during office hours or fill in a form on our user-friendly web site. Get in touch today.

Different Number Plates To Purchase

Wednesday, November 18th, 2009

There’s more than one type of number plate legally displayed on vehicles, and compatible with Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) rules.

The original DVLA number plates were dateless – beginning with the famous A1 mark in London in 1903. These registrations were initially issued by county councils.

In 2003, the DVLA brought in legislation which meant anyone supplying DVLA number plates had to be registered with them.

DVLA number plates must be spaced correctly and bear the name and postcode of their registered supplier. It is against the law to supply number plates which are mis-spaced, misrepresented, or have non-standard fonts or non-compliant flag badges.

Unfortunately, there’s also more than one reason why people buy DVLA number plates. Unfortunate because theft of number plates has soared. Rising fuel prices have also meant an increase in number plate theft for use in garage forecourt theft.

At Platinum Plates, we are always happy to supply DVLA number plates whether you are buying a personalised number plate because you want to make your vehicle truly original, or if you need a replacement set because yours has been damaged or stolen.

We’re members of the Institute of Registration Agents and Dealers and of course fully licensed to supply DVLA number plates. We believe in good customer service, too, and willing to spend time answering any questions you may have.

What Are Cherished Number Plates?

Thursday, November 12th, 2009

As the name suggests, cherished number plates are a registration mark with a special significance, usually for historic or sentimental reasons. Sometimes, cherished number plates have been in the same family for decades.

The idea of cherished number plates was born after registration rules changed to allow marks to be transferred from vehicle to vehicle. The DVLC (as it was before it became the DVLA) allowed this in response to public demand.

These days it’s even easier to have cherished number plates since you can acquire retention and entitlement certificates. This means, for example, that you can buy cherished number plates for a child and pay a small annual fee to the DVLA to keep them up to date until the child is old enough to drive.

One of the first people to have an early version of cherished number plates was the Earl Russell, who queued all night in London in 1903 to acquire the plate, ‘A 1′ for his Napier. So really cherished marks were the first personalised number plates.

These days, you don’t have to be a millionaire to acquire your own cherished number plates. And whether you’re looking to buy or sell your cherished number plates, make us at Platinum Plates your first port of call.

We offer a wide range of dateless cherished marks, prefix and current style personalised number plates.

It’s so easy to look for your cherished number plates using our online search facility – see our website for more details.

Tips for Choosing Personalised Number Plates

Thursday, October 29th, 2009

There could be many reasons why you want personalised number plates, and many reasons for choosing particular letters and numbers.

Personalised number plates make lovely gifts – whether for Christmas, a special birthday or a significant anniversary. They can celebrate an engagement, a wedding or a retirement.

And the great news is that the Internet makes buying personalised number plates easier than ever. With prices starting at an incredibly low £49, you don’t have to be a rock star or famous footballer to be able to afford them.

The range of private registrations up for grabs literally is in the millions, so the choice of ways to make your mark can seem almost endless. Of course many people choose their initials, or those of their business, on their personalised number plates. But you can go for anything which has a special significance to you. The rules on arrangement, size and font of number plates are quite rigid. But there are things you can do to craft your own plate – for example the number 1 can be a letter ‘l’ or a ‘D’ can serve as an ‘O’.

Selling Your Number Plates Online

Tuesday, October 27th, 2009

Online sales of personal number plates have soared in recent years.

Of course, buying and selling over the Internet saves time and hassle, and often money, for buyer and seller. All the details of the transfer can be sorted out very quickly, either at home or at a place to suit you and at a convenient time.

Usually, the dealer will do the necessary research to confirm availability, identifying proof of ownership, and completing the relevant DVLA forms for the transfer.

If you’re considering selling your number plates online, you need to provide your dealer with proof of ownership. This might include an up-to-date copy of the V5 (Log Book), DVLA form V778, (retention document), or DVLA form V750, (Certificate of entitlement.)

A value will then be established for your number plates. As with selling anything else, the value you get for your number plates depends on the amount you originally paid for it, and how long you have had the number plate for, as well as the popularity of your particular registration mark.

At Platinum Plates we can help you sell your number plates, and get a good price for them. Using our user-friendly site, you can easily find out how much your number plates are worth.

We’re open until late seven nights a week, and, of course, our site is open 24 hours.

Why Buy Private Number Plates?

Wednesday, October 21st, 2009

We’ve all seen Alan Sugar’s on The Apprentice (AMS 1) and racing driver Lewis Hamilton famously paid a cool £200,000 for his (LEW 1S.) But private number plates are no longer the sole preserve of the rich and famous, and don’t have to cost a fortune.
But why buy private number plates at all? In fact, there are many reasons why they are increasingly sought after.

Dateless number plates mask the true age of your vehicle. Private number plates can also be seen as an opportunity for self-expression, and as a chance to stand out from the crowd.

But, as well as being fun, private number plates may also turn out to be a good investment. If the number you register is unique and popular, you may well get a higher return if and when you sell it.

The Internet has made searching for private number plates much easier. Platinum Plates is one specialist web site where you can search for the plates you want for your car, truck or other vehicle. Once you have found the registration you want, give us a call and we’ll do the rest.

We can give you a free valuation for the plates you want, at no obligation. We can also help suggest combinations of letters and numbers you could have on your private number plates.

See our website or give us a call for more details about how we can help you buy or sell private number plates.

A Brief History of DVLA Number Plates

Thursday, October 15th, 2009

There’s nothing new about vehicle licensing. In 1903, the Motor Car Act introduced steps to identify motor vehicles and the people who drove them.

The first registration marks had a single letter and one number – A1 was issued in London! Over the years, these got longer. In 1965, a new central administration was created with the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Centre in Swansea, using automatic data processing.

Since 1974, this organisation has been the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA), and there are now also 40 local offices working on registrations.

From 1 January 1973, vehicles had to have reflective number plates – black on white at the front and black on yellow at the rear. A new format introduced in late 2001 meant that DVLA number plates now take the style of two letters, a two digit year identifying number and three suffix letters.

Millions of personalised DVLA number plates are available online. Search for your own dream plates and make them yours for life. At Platinum Plates, we have stacks of DVLA number plates for sale.
