Clever Ideas for Your Personal Number Plate

Saturday, May 15th, 2010

One of the most common types of number plates are ones that spell names or surnames but if you don’t fancy this or you have a name that many other people have then get creative with some of these fantastic ideas as to what to include on your number plate. Remember, the more creative you can get, the more personalised your number plate can become.

Fun – make people smile when you drive down the street. If you fancy quite a light-hearted number plate then why not express yourself with a funny personal number plate. For example, you could include a greeting, e.g. “CYA” or something a little flirtatious, e.g. “SXY”.

Jobs/Hobbies – if you are particularly passionate about a hobby you could include this on your number plate. If you are an avid flyer, you could include “JET” on your number plate. Or, if you have your own business or want to promote a business you could include this within your number plate; for example a carpenter might have “SAW” in their number plate.

Patriotic – if you are a die-hard patriot then you could always include your country when deciding on your personalised number plate. Someone from Scotland might have “SCO” included at the end of their number plate for example.

Pets – show your fluffy friends just how much they mean to you by including them on your personalised number plate. For mans best friend something simple like “DOG” on the end of your number plate adds that special touch.

The Extremities of Personal Number Plates

Friday, May 14th, 2010

Many of us are now choosing to add a touch of our personality to our cars with things like initials, lucky numbers, football teams…the possibilities are endless! However, they do need approving by the DVLA first which is why some people’s cherished number plates are receiving the no-no from the DVLA.

Like with everything there is always someone that tries to push their luck when it comes to choosing their own personal number plates, and the DVLA is used to receiving some requests of the more bizarre nature. Some number plates have been deemed too rude to place on cars and include things like; L4 TEX and STR 11P. Well, it was worth a try wasn’t it!

Equally, some football fans are very keen to show their undying support for their football team, and what better way to do this than to personalise your number plate. One West Ham fanatic paid out a staggering £57,000 for the number plate WE57 HAM. However, whatever car he owns from now on will display his cherished number plate and there will be no question as to who he supports when he drives past!

Whilst some personalised number plate stories may seem a little extreme they are just an elite few. Personal number plates in the majority of cases allow you to purchase something that can literally last you a lifetime and you’ll never have the problem of trying to remember your car number plate ever again! Here at Platinum Plates we believe there is a private number plate especially for you and with our easy to use “Create-a-plate” feature you could be designing your very own cherished number plate in no time!

Number Plate Auction

Tuesday, July 28th, 2009

The appeal of personalised number plates is becoming a worldwide phenomenon. We have recently reported details from a recent number plate auction in India and are please to expand the news to include a sale last month in New South Wales.

The number plates were sold in a special number plate auction held by Shannon’s on behalf of the RTA, New South Wales equivalent of the DVLA. The revenue generated from the private number plates that were sold scooped a whopping $2.4 Million and surpassed all expectations. The top private number plate fetched $115,000 for a three number combination, 215. The same bidder also secured private number plate 214, a mere snip at $110,000.

The purely numeric format obviously makes it harder to make a personal number plate compared to our own DVLA number plates, that said presumably 214 & 215 had significance to the buyer if he parted with $225,000.

Personal Number Plate Auction

Saturday, July 25th, 2009

An Indian business man has forked out 415,000 Indian rupees for personal number plate CH-04-K-0001. In India this is a ton of cash, converted to British Pounds it is about £5,243.00 which although a lot of money, it’s a pretty unremarkable figure in UK personal number plates terms.

The new owner, Harjinder Singh Pannu, bought this personal number plate for his Audi on Wednesday at the auction held by the Registering and Licenseing Authority (RLA). India’s equivalent to our very own Driver and vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA). There were 36 personal number plates entered in the auction which is reported to have raised 1,763,000 rupees.

The desirability of the personal number plates entered in this auction no doubt creates a stir in India. Honestly speaking they look pretty naff to me, not the quality we are used to seeing at the DVLA auctions. The quantity of personal number plates offered is minute compared to our auctions. The next DVLA auction has 1600 car registration numbers entered with private number plates like 4 O entered in it.

Prefix Personal Number Plates

Saturday, July 18th, 2009

The term prefix when used to describe personal number plates refers to the first alpha character. This Character was originally used as the year identifier for car registration numbers with the first being “A” issued in August 1983. At that time there was just one new registration series issued each year.

The prefix series of car registration numbers are now popular as personal number plates. The prefix personal number plates tend to be more affordable than their dateless registration number forerunners. The availability of unissued prefix number plates is now limited as there are literally hundreds being purchased every day and have been for many years.

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority, DVLA, have recently declared there intention to release some remaining prefix numbers over the next five years. The first of the proposed rollouts is scheduled for October 2010 and will be the extended R prefix range. We will post more information when we have it here.

Personalised Number Plates on TV

Sunday, July 5th, 2009

On Friday there was a programme on channel four that covered some personalised number plates and their owners. The documentary style story discussed some high value private registration numbers as well as covering some cheaper alternatives. The main focus of the programme was to demonstrate how sought after personalised number plates are.

There were several car registration numbers featured with the main focus being around N1 GEL owned by an Essex business man and took pride of place on his yellow lambo. The only thing that came close to this fellas, quality personalised number plate and superb car, was his “thunderbirds” style hidden garage under his drive, you have to see it, the ultimate boyz toy.

Three other Nigel’s that had private number plates, albeit they all conceded they would rather have N1 GEL. They each had to make do with personalised number plates N2 GEL that was an account referred to as Nigel 2 and AU 1 which was a gold bullion dealer in Birmingham’s famous Jewellery quarter, and BL03 JOB was a chap from Tewkesbury

The AU 1 number plate shares the alpha combination for the periodic table of elements for Gold (AU 79) and apparently featured in the James Bond film Gold finger.

Increased Number Plate Misrepresentation Penalties

Tuesday, June 30th, 2009

Motorists caught with illegal number plates will now face on-the-spot fines of £60 previously £30. The increase in fixed penalty includes number plates with illegal fonts, incorrect letter size, Mis spaced characters and non compliant colour of number plates. The use of illegal number plates is claimed to hamper criminal investigations.

When purchasing legal number plates you should check with the supplier that they are registered with the DVLA (Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority) as a registered number plate supplier. The supplier will require you to prove your entitlement to the registration number and check your identity. If they don’t they are breaking the law.

The Police & MOT testing stations are being put under increased pressure to enforce the legislation over the display of registration numbers so if you get a doggy set of number plates from an unscrupulous source expect some unwanted attention.

Personalised number plate auction

Tuesday, June 30th, 2009

The RBS Williams F1 conference centre is to host the next DVLA auction of personalised number plates. There are 1586 lots entered in to the private number plate sale which will take place on 5th, 6th & 7th August 2009. Two car registration numbers guaranteed to generate significant interest and no doubt will achieve eye watering figures are 4 O (lot 1060) & 6 W (lot 1506). The reserve price for each of these personalised number plates is £8,000 however these numbers are going to achieve much higher sale prices.

With the venue having a strong formula one connection it seems the DVLA have designed the sales catalogue to suit with several F1 personalised number plates. There is even F1 MAX, I wonder will this take the fancy of the outgoing FIA president Max Moseley.

Private Number Plates – they’ll make you smile!

Wednesday, June 17th, 2009

I’ve been a fan of private number plates for more years than I care to remember. Over the years there have been car registration numbers that have made me smile, with various cogitations. The private number plates have been significant to the owner for a multitude of reasons, like, football teams i.e. A1 4VFC, X1 WBA, S2 LFC etc or based on a names F1 5COT. OO08 JON etc or initials 35 EJ, LNP 8k etc and too many others to list, but you get the idea.

Probably the funniest have been naughty numbers i.e. TOT 13 (Totty) of S1 EXY, Sex related car registration numbers were held back by the DVLA originally but there have been a few about recently. Probably the funniest private number plate I have seen was a couple of years ago when I saw SHA 661N (SHAG*IN) on a car in the Midlands.

We would love to know what private number plates you have seen that you found entertaining and welcome your comments

DVLA Speeds up the process for selling private number plates on retention

Wednesday, October 29th, 2008

The DVLA are introducing changes to the process of assigning a vehicle registration mark to a vehicle not registered to the grantee. Under the current rules if a private number plate is on Retention Certificate, V778, or is on a Certificate of Entitlement, V750, the certificate Nominee has to be added at the DVLA’s head office in Swansea and returned, before the registration number can be assigned to a vehicle registered to anyone other than the grantee. This process can take several weeks and will hold up the sale of a personal number plate held on certificate. Under the new rules the nominee will be able to be added or changed at the point of assignment at the local DVLA office, thus speeding up the process.
