DVLA Number Plates Crackdown

Friday, August 14th, 2009

The DVLA has recently written to its registered number plate suppliers informing them of a campaign to ensure legislation regarding the supply of number plates is enforced. The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority have said there are ongoing investigations following a number of alleged instances of rogue traders supplying DVLA number plates. The Agency is also looking at number plates that fail to conform to the legal display of a vehicle registration number and where the required checks have not been carried out.

The investigations have already uncovered a number of individuals supplying number plates that were none compliant and no doubt they also failed to carry out the required identity and entitlement checks. The DVLA number plates crackdown has included sweeps of markets and car boot sales to hunt out illegal suppliers.

The DVLA number plate suppliers who act within the law have been frustrated with traders acting unlawfully and supplying show plates and the like. The DVLA state they are committed to ensuring a level playing field for all number plate suppliers in the UK and anyone found supplying number plates illegally will swiftly be bought to task.

Buying dvla number plates

Over that last seven years motorists have spent £571,000,000 on DVLA number plates. It is estimated that the Driver and Vehicle licensening Authority generates around a quarter of a million pounds a day from personalised number plates revenue.

2008 was a record year for the DVLA auctions with 1D selling for £352,411. The previous record for a registration number sold at auction was 51NGH which sold for £254,000 in 2006. One motorist paid £51,500 for dvla number plate 1 RAN and another parted with £27,200 for the personalised number plate WEL 5H.

I guess DVLA number plates at auction are like everything else in life, something is worth what someone will pay for it. If there are two or more parties interested in a personalised number plate the price can increase quickly in the bidder’s test of determination.
