Increased Number Plate Misrepresentation Penalties

Tuesday, June 30th, 2009

Motorists caught with illegal number plates will now face on-the-spot fines of £60 previously £30. The increase in fixed penalty includes number plates with illegal fonts, incorrect letter size, Mis spaced characters and non compliant colour of number plates. The use of illegal number plates is claimed to hamper criminal investigations.

When purchasing legal number plates you should check with the supplier that they are registered with the DVLA (Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority) as a registered number plate supplier. The supplier will require you to prove your entitlement to the registration number and check your identity. If they don’t they are breaking the law.

The Police & MOT testing stations are being put under increased pressure to enforce the legislation over the display of registration numbers so if you get a doggy set of number plates from an unscrupulous source expect some unwanted attention.

Personalised number plate auction

Tuesday, June 30th, 2009

The RBS Williams F1 conference centre is to host the next DVLA auction of personalised number plates. There are 1586 lots entered in to the private number plate sale which will take place on 5th, 6th & 7th August 2009. Two car registration numbers guaranteed to generate significant interest and no doubt will achieve eye watering figures are 4 O (lot 1060) & 6 W (lot 1506). The reserve price for each of these personalised number plates is £8,000 however these numbers are going to achieve much higher sale prices.

With the venue having a strong formula one connection it seems the DVLA have designed the sales catalogue to suit with several F1 personalised number plates. There is even F1 MAX, I wonder will this take the fancy of the outgoing FIA president Max Moseley.

The DVLA released details of their third, car registration number, sealed bid sale. The sale opened at 10am on 22nd JUne 2009 and will close at 2.00pm on Friday 10th July 2009. All bids are to be sent in writing to the DVLA Auctioneers. The list of 1000 car registration numbers are available to view on the DVLA website, the private number plates have reserve prices starting from as little as £130.00 plus associated costs.

There are a few Gems in the sale but mainly the car registration numbers are pretty unremarkable made up of Prefix, Suffix and a handful of dateless car registrations. The way the bidding works is the highest tender wins at the price tendered.

Private Number Plates – they’ll make you smile!

Wednesday, June 17th, 2009

I’ve been a fan of private number plates for more years than I care to remember. Over the years there have been car registration numbers that have made me smile, with various cogitations. The private number plates have been significant to the owner for a multitude of reasons, like, football teams i.e. A1 4VFC, X1 WBA, S2 LFC etc or based on a names F1 5COT. OO08 JON etc or initials 35 EJ, LNP 8k etc and too many others to list, but you get the idea.

Probably the funniest have been naughty numbers i.e. TOT 13 (Totty) of S1 EXY, Sex related car registration numbers were held back by the DVLA originally but there have been a few about recently. Probably the funniest private number plate I have seen was a couple of years ago when I saw SHA 661N (SHAG*IN) on a car in the Midlands.

We would love to know what private number plates you have seen that you found entertaining and welcome your comments

What will happen to Private Number Plates CR 7 ?

Saturday, June 13th, 2009

This weeks record breaking transfer deal that sees Cristiano Ronaldo move from Old Trafford to El Estadio Santiago Bernabeu. What will Cristiano do with his much loved CR 7 private number plate. There were lots of rumours about the young Portuguese player buying the quality DVLA number plate from a Troon businessman last year and it is believed Ronaldo paid well into 6 figures for his car registration number.

I wonder will he sell the private number plate, or will he put it on a dvla number plate retention certificate in case he ever returns to blighty? At least we won’t see him at Villa Park this season when Machester United visit!
